Floodplain Views & Wildlife

The Tropical Ecology Reserach Facility is situated in Middle Point - although there is little to find except the Facility! Middle Point is located slightly eastward of the Adelaide river. Most of the land is very flat, and during the wet season large areas become flooded. This creates swampy areas, where many snakes, turtles and frogs abound. The flood plains are also home to crocodiles; however, there presence is rather enigmatic. Being hunted down to almost extinction, these prehistoric animals are just recovering, and still rather eager not to be seen.

Between the flood plains you'll find a rather open woodland, with a.o. Eucalyptus sp., Cycas sp., Pandanus spiralis, and a variety of other shrubs as well as herbaceous vegetation. The trees are rather small, and leaf cover is often scant enough to permit sun shine reaching the forest floor.

Roads through areas that become flooded likewise become flooded. The infrastructure is well adapted to this flooding, but for people from Holland it is a rather unnerving experience just to drive into a river...
