This hoverfly mimics the hornet, Vespa crabro.
The match between model and mimic is often not very well conveyed by photographs, since they freeze the insect, eliminating all dynamic aspects.
This certainly apply to these photo's, too - from them, one would easily judge this magnificent hoverfly to be a poor mimic. However, when I saw
this fly hovering I could hardly believe it was anything else but a hornet!
