Courtship and mating
Zygaena sp.
Three males surround a female; this situation is indicative of the intense struggle of males for access to females.

Issoria lathonia

Pyrgus sp.
Courtship. The vibrating wings of the female indicate that she is willing to engage in mating.

Melitaea phoebe
Male courting an unwilling female. This is obvious from the position of the abdomen, which prevents the male from coming close to the female.

Polyommatus icarus
Courting male. The female has raised her abdomen, which suggests she's not in for fun.
Amstelveen, the Netherlands; 5 August 2006.
